The Sabres Alumni Assumes Control The Buffalo Sabres and the Buffalo Sabres Alumni Association, in their ongoing commitment to youth hockey in Western New York, today announced they will be buying and assuming control of the Buffalo Junior Sabres. The Jr. Sabres are the only U.S.-based team that participates in the Ontario Provincial Junior “A” Hockey League (OPJHL). The OPJHL is scouted heavily by Division I U.S. colleges, and players in the league are annually offered scholarships to play at these institutions of higher education. School CommitmentsNick Ryan - Committed to Geneseo, a D3 program. Excellent skater, great hands. Plays in all situations on the ice. 100% effort given to the Jr. Sabres program over a 3 year period. Will definitely bring experience and leadership to the Geneseo program. Chris Barrea - Committed to Canisius College, a D1 program. Creative and take charge type of Defenseman. Leader on the back end in points and minutes played. Was in the top ten in scoring for defensemen in the OPJHL. Huge upside for potential heading into his college hockey career. Canisius is getting a hard working - dedicated defenseman who can put points on the board. Josh Schmitt - Committed to Utica, a D3 program. Josh was a five year player with the Jr. Sabres. He has seen the team go from a strong program to weak to back to being stable again, and in that time has shown to be a truly great teammate. He truly has never wanted to be anything else other than a Hockey player, and now will continue as a student athlete at Utica College. Josh is a smart and tough nosed defenseman who is interested in only helping his team be the best it can be. Nick Pannepinto - Committed to Brockport University a D3 program. Nick has game breaking speed and ability. He became a very consistent scorer for the Jr. Sabres and was a joy to coach for 2 years. Each year he got better for us and I look for him to continue his growth as a player and student at Brockport. Matt Bessing - Committed to Plattsburgh a D3 program. Creative and very skilled Matt was a big part of the Junior Sabres power play both years he was with us. Chris Kaleta - Committed to Courtland State. Kaleta, the Captain of the Junior Sabres the past two seasons, epitomized what the team was about. At home or on the road, teams had to be on their toes when hard hitting Kaleta was on the ice. His hits were the topic of conversation for days afterwards and his hard work and "never quit" attitude was infectious. A good team leader, Kaleta has committed to attend Courtland State this fall.
