The Buffalo Jr. Sabres got a much needed two points this past Saturday when they beat the Georgetown Raiders 4-3 in a shootout. The win snapped a five game road losing streak for the Jr. Sabres. After a scoreless first period Georgetown opened up the scoring getting two powerplay goals four minutes apart from each other from Jeremy Wick. However, the Jr. Sabres responded with two powerplay goals of their own only 29 seconds apart later in the period. Nick Melligan scored the first powerplay goal with Matty Owczarczak and Keving Hughes getting the assists. Forward Pat Conte added the second with Owczarczak and Hughes again getting the assists. Less than a minute after the Jr. Sabres tied the game at 2-2, Georgetown's Jeremy Wick completed his hat trick to give the Raider's a 3-2 lead going into the second intermission. The Jr. Sabres tied the game up just three minutes into the third period when Tyler Matecki got his eighth goal of the season with Conte and Owczarczak assisting on the play. After the rest of the third period remained scoreless the two teams went to overtime. Overtime saw Georgetown dominating most of the play outshooting the Jr. Sabres 5-0 in the frame. The Jr. Sabres however held off the Georgetown attack to force a shootout. Conte got the game winning shootout goal for the Jr. Sabres after goaltender Derek Mohney stopped all three Georgetown shooters. Mohney also made 32 saves on 35 shots for the night. Each team had multiple powerplay opportunities throughout a game that featured the teams combining for a total 101 penalty minutes. The Jr. Sabres went 2-for-12 on the powerplay while Georgetown went 2-for-16. The win gives the Jr. Sabres a total of 46 points on the year which puts them in 10th place. They sit two points behind Brampton and six points behind Vaughan for the coveted eight playoff spot. The Jr. Sabres have 11 games remaining and their next one comes on January 28th when they will host the last placed Milton Icehawks at HSBC Arena at 7:30. Click here to go back to news articles |
