Buffalo Jr. Sabres used a five goal third period to beat the Milton Icehawks
The Buffalo Jr. Sabres used a five goal third period to beat the Milton Icehawks 7-1 last Thursday at HSBC Arena.
Forward Greg Ryan got the Jr. Sabres off to a fast start scoring 1:56 into the first period them a quick 1-0 lead. Nick Melligan scored with 46 seconds left in the first period to give the Jr. Sabres a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission. Justin Hoomaian and Dennis Playfair assisted on the play.
After a lopsided first period that saw the Jr. Sabres outshooting the Icehawks 23-9, the second period of play was more even. The two teams combined for a total of 35 shots (18 for Milton and 17 for the Sabres), but only one goal was produced. That goal came three minutes into the second period off the stick of Milton's Evan Matheson to cut the Jr. Sabres lead to 2-1.
The third period was all Jr. Sabres though as they capitalized on their scoring chances getting five goals on 16 shots. The first goal of the third period was scored by Michael Cassidy with Mark Metzger and Tyler Matecki getting the assists. The Jr. Sabres then got two goals thirteen seconds apart from each other midway through the period to push the lead to 5-1. Matthew Owczarczak and Justin Hoomaian added goals later on to cap the scoring for the Jr. Sabres.
Melligan, Owczarczak, Cassidy and Hoomaian all had a goal and an assist for the Jr. Sabres while Brendan Arniel and Matecki chipped in two assists apiece. Paul Berrafato recorded the win for Buffalo stopping 39 of 40 shots.
The win moved the Jr. Sabres one spot outside of the playoffs into ninth place in the OJAHL standings with 48 points. Vaughan currently holds the coveted eighth playoff spot with 52 points.
